The Wedding MC has an important responsibility at the wedding reception. In fact, the Wedding MC can "make" or "break" the wedding reception.
This is the bride and groom’s special day. They’re counting on you to make their wedding reception an unforgettable event.
And they have high expectations that you'll carry out your role as Wedding MC in a professional manner.
That's why it's important that you don’t disappoint them with a shoddy performance.
If you’re new to being a Wedding Master of Ceremonies then chances are you’re not familiar with many of the Wedding MC's duties.
Here are 4 mistakes many inexperienced wedding emcee’s make:
Wedding MC Mistake #1 - Being unprepared
Preparation is one of the key elements to being an effective and entertaining wedding emcee.
That means consulting with the wedding planners on what they expect from you.
Some weddings have a formal wedding planner. But in many cases, the wedding planners will be the bride and the mother of the bride.
You’ll need to prepare a complete order of events - a "run sheet" of what is taking place throughout the reception, from start to finish. From your run sheet you’ll be able to map out your material for the event.
As the wedding emcee, it’s important that you have plenty of material on hand. That includes jokes, anecdotes, amusing stories, and audience participation games to entertain the wedding guests and keep the wedding reception flowing smoothly.
Wedding MC Mistake #2 - “Winging it” instead of practicing before the wedding reception
One of the best ways to overcome nervousness and ensure a successful wedding reception is to practice your material so it looks effortless.
There are a number of things you can practice...
They include the opening welcome speech to the wedding guests, the bridal party introductions, the introductions preceding the speakers who will be giving wedding speeches and toasts, the wedding mc speech if the bride and groom have requested you give one, the jokes and amusing stories you tell, and the announcements.
Wedding MC Mistake #3 - Being unprepared for the unexpected
Being prepared also means expecting - and planning for - the unexpected...
There’s no lectern or podium. The microphone doesn’t work. The seating arrangements are wrong. The caterers are behind in preparing the main meal. The wedding photographer takes longer than anticipated with the wedding pictures. The bridal party is late arriving and you have a room full of wedding guests to entertain in the meantime.
Expect glitches to happen and make contingency plans in consultation with the wedding planners before the wedding reception.
Wedding MC Mistake #4 - Thinking that the Wedding MC duties are primarily about public speaking
As wedding emcee, you will fill several roles before and during the wedding reception.
You’ll be a planner, advisor, interviewer, co-ordinator, public speaker, and entertainer.
Each role will have different duties and responsibilities...
You’ll plan the wedding reception with the wedding planners and give your advice.
You’ll co-ordinate events with the bridal party, the people giving the wedding speeches and toasts, the entertainers, the caterers, the photographer, the videographer.
You’ll interview members of the immediate family, the bride and groom, and perhaps their close friends to get background material to use during the reception or for your Wedding MC Speech.
You’ll use your public speaking and entertainment skills to amuse and entertain the wedding guests during the wedding reception and keep the program flowing smoothly.
Being selected as the Wedding MC is a huge honor. Along with that honor though are many responsibilities that require thorough preparation and practice to make the wedding reception a resounding success.
